Halloween Safety For Kids of All Ages

Halloween Safety....For Kids of All Ages!

1. Make sure kids are visible to traffic! Kids get excited about trick-or-treating and may not take the time to look before crossing. Make sure cars can see them. Vedante makes super reflective Pop-Bands, a pair of light-reflective bands that "snap" around the forearm or wrist of kids and adults. Cars will see them for sure (the white can be seen up to 1,500 feet)! They are great after Halloween for walkers and runners! Glow sticks are also an affordable way to be visible.

2. Make sure costumes are safe! They can pose a tripping hazard if they are too long, cutting hazard if sword and knife blades are sharp, fire hazard if they come in contact with a lighted jack-o-lantern, etc.

3. Know where your kids are at all times! You need to know their route and they are to understand that they are to follow that route unless they tell you otherwise. Make sure they have a cell phone in order to call in an emergency situation.

4. Stress group safety. No matter what, they need to know to stay together. Explain that running ahead in order to be the first or to get the best candy can be dangerous. Under no circumstances are kids to enter anyone's house. Ever!

5. I don't think I have to talk about candy safety.... Do I? All candy is to be checked to make sure it hasn't been opened or tampered with. No eating anything prepared in someone's kitchen. Fruit can be tricky, too. Only eat fruit from people you know. You never know what people may inject or do with,or to, fruit.

6. Avoid masks and hoods that can block the view. Kids need to see where they are going and be aware of what is going on around them. You can even get glow in the dark face paint that helps with visibility. Or use a pencil to create a fun, safe look, see photo.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM "Tracey, the Safety Lady"!
